Managing hypothyroidism with a treatment like UNITHROID usually involves taking a single tablet every day.2,3
Since you will always need a replacement for the thyroxine your body is lacking, you will likely need treatment your entire life.3 That's why it's important to find one that best fits your needs, no matter which direction life takes you.

reformulations, or gaps in availability1
UNITHROID contains no ingredient made from a gluten-containing grain (wheat, barley, or rye)1
Hypothyroidism is a common condition that millions of people live with every day. While women are more likely to have hypothyroidism, it can affect anyone at any age.3,5
If you have hypothyroidism, it means your thyroid gland doesn't make enough T4, a hormone your body needs to function properly.3
Doctors diagnose hypothyroidism by testing thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, and follow with a thyroid hormone test, if needed.3
Managing hypothyroidism means achieving normal TSH levels. With a treatment like UNITHROID, hypothyroidism can be managed successfully.2,3
To get and maintain normal TSH levels, it's important to stay consistent with your treatment. In fact, some treatment guidelines recommend that patients should be maintained on the same levothyroxine product. This may be important because small differences in absorption may affect your TSH levels, or your body may be sensitive to certain ingredients in one product, but not another.6,7
Even if your doctor writes "UNITHROID" on your prescription, your pharmacy could substitute another treatment (usually a generic version), depending on your state's laws and health insurance. If so, there's no guarantee you will receive a substitute that's made by the same company every time.
If your doctor wants you to specifically receive UNITHROID, he or she may also need to write "Dispense as Written" (or DAW)‡ on your prescription. This means substitutions are not permitted.

If you receive a different medication, tell your pharmacist you cannot accept a substitute because your doctor has prescribed UNITHROID only.
To start UNITHROID right away, ask your doctor about receiving a 2-week sample supply. This can give your pharmacy time to order your specific dosage of UNITHROID.
Your doctor will help ensure you get the right dosage of UNITHROID to meet your specific needs. When you begin UNITHROID, your doctor will regularly monitor your TSH levels. This will help your doctor determine whether your dosage needs to be adjusted.2 Consistency is important when you take UNITHROID. Always remember to2:
every morning before breakfast
before you eat or drink (water is OK)
before or after taking other medicine that may affect UNITHROID
Some foods and medicines can prevent UNITHROID from being properly absorbed by your body. These include soybean flour, walnuts, dietary fiber, grapefruit juice, antacids, iron, and calcium supplements.2
Keep in mind
If you have just started UNITHROID, it may take 4 to 6 weeks before you notice an improvement in your symptoms.2
For a complete list of foods and medicines you should be mindful of while taking UNTHROID, talk to your doctor and see the Prescribing Information.
When managing hypothyroidism, consistency matters. It’s important to take UNITHROID the same way every day (using medication reminders such as pill boxes and cell phone alerts can help); and to make sure you receive the exact treatment your doctor prescribed.

Too much levothyroxine may affect your heart, especially if you are elderly or have cardiovascular disease. When starting UNITHROID, contact your healthcare provider immediately if you have any signs of increased heart rate, chest pain, or an irregular heartbeat.
Too much levothyroxine has been associated with increased bone loss, especially in women after menopause.
Take UNITHROID exactly as prescribed.
Take UNITHROID as a single dose, preferably on an empty stomach, ½ to 1 hour before breakfast with a full glass of water to avoid choking or gagging.
Products such as iron and calcium supplements and antacids can decrease the absorption of levothyroxine, so UNITHROID should be taken 4 hours before or after taking these products.
It may take several weeks before you notice an improvement in symptoms. Once your healthcare provider has found your specific dose of UNITHROID, it is important to have periodic lab tests and clinical evaluations to assess your response.
Treatment with thyroid hormone replacement will likely be lifelong.
